We might think that others will follow us just because of our titles or places in a business hierarchy.

But in today’s work environments, that’s unlikely.

What matters more is your ability to inspire your team members’ greatest performances and contributions.

Inspirational leadership is the process of creating energy and purpose around the team’s vision or goals. But what does it take?

Usually, it’s a combination of perceived personal characteristics (like integrity and passion), along with skills in:

  • communication and collaboration
  • delegation
  • listening.

Why is it useful?

When we think about motivating others, we tend to focus on pay rises and praise. But the most important sources of motivation are a sense of autonomy, the chance to grow and develop mastery, and a sense of meaning and purpose.

All of these things are influenced by the environment in which people work. And leaders create the conditions under which great performance can happen.

As a leader, you can be a role model, providing those around you with the inspiration to go above and beyond in their quest to do great work.

Top performance — and real breakthroughs — come when employees are not just motivated, but inspired. And as a leader, you’re a core part of that inspiration.
